Hampton Cardinals - Harold Doffing Park - Hampton, MN

There was no history available on the field or for the team online, and little history is also available at the field.   So, I went to the City of Hampton and drove the streets to get a feel for the town.  I have driven past many times, but have yet to go into the City.  I found an emblem that the Hampton Cardinals were established in 1936.  I unsuccessfully tried looking for something on Harold Doffing, but I assume he must be a descendant of M. Doffing, whose name is on the existing building below.

M. Doffing building - 1897

The first settler to claim land in the area now known as Hampton was John M. Bell in the fall of 1854.  The Bell family quickly made a home for themselves in Hampton Township.  Later, in 1854, Stephen D. Bell, brother of John Bell, toured the area and subsequently moved his family to the Township.  Other area settlers included German immigrants such as Conrad, Peter, Nicholas Doffing, John J. Fox, Joseph Stumpf, and Nicholas Kranz.  A post office was opened in 1856.  The 1.24-square-mile City was created on April 6, 1858, and named after the City of Hampton, Connecticut.

Parking

Parking is available on two small lots located near the field.  Neither is protected from foul balls.  In fact, during the game, over half the cars parked there were moved.  Parking is primarily on the local streets.  With approximately 50 people in attendance on July 28, 2024, convenient parking was easily accessible.

Spectator Options

There are plenty of seating options with five full-sized picnic tables under the concessions pavilion, plenty of room along the third base side to set up a chair, and the primary bleacher/press box area behind home plate.  The beaches are traditional bleachers without back supports.  The field is not equipped with lights, so only daylight games are possible.

Concessions—(I prefer a hot dog with root beer)

The concessions are located near the 3rd base foul line and are inconvenient for the main seating area.  The hot dog is from Greg's Meats just south of the field, and they had A&W Root Beer.  The Hot Dog is slightly above average, with a crisp casing and a unique blend of spices.  Condiments were limited to catsup and mustard, with no relish or onions available.  Although this is a public park, they allow people to bring their own coolers, which include beer.

Summary

This field lacks the small-town allure, along a major highway with commercial developments in clear view.  However, there was a sense of community and energy from the spectators.  This could be because there were only four players over 21, the youngest being 15, with an average age of 19.  I typically see half the team over 23, like the Rochester Royals Hampton players today, who had half the team over 21 and an average age of 23.

Since this location is close to the metro, I would head there for a game in the future.  I will return when the opportunity arises.

Bell Field - Fairbault Lakers - Fairbault, MN

Shattuck Baseball Team 1886
Faribault, MN, has a long-standing baseball tradition, largely due to the popularity of the Shattuck High School team.  After the Great Depression, townball excitement commenced.

Hadley P.  Bell was Faribault’s mayor, and he and the city council voted to purchase 40 acres of the George Caron Farm located just south of the Rice County Fairgrounds for a public park.  The public, however, was none too pleased.  Still battling through the Great Depression, the citizenry took affront to the purchase, and in the next election, every council member except Mayor Bell and one council member was defeated.  However, Alexander Faribault Park was constructed and survived.  Driveways were constructed, picnic benches and tables were installed, and playground equipment was purchased.

Bell Field State Tournament 1969
The city was funding the field's construction in the Northwest corner of the park with liquor and cigarette taxes.  The lights cost $13,000, the grandstand $20,000, and the remainder goes to grading and seeding.  Katrochvil Construction of New Prague was hired, and work began in the fall of 1948.  The city was funding the field with liquor and cigarette taxes.  The lights cost $13,000, the grandstand $20,000, and the remainder goes to grading and seeding.  This was when townball’s popularity was nearing an all-time peak.

On opening day in 1948, Faribault’s team added the nickname ‘Lakers,’ bringing 1,150 spectators.  Attendance peaked at over 3,400 spectators per game, marking the height of popularity.  By 1954, attendance had dropped to fewer than 1,600 attendees per game.

In the mid-1960s, the Lakers ceased playing.  In the late 1960s, Chuck Madson, Lowell Nomeland, Leo Brand, and Nort Johnson revived the Lakers.  Within a few years, the Lakers returned to the state tournament.  In the late 1970s, the Lakers and the city split the cost of installing new lights, and around the same time, they replaced the rotting wooden outfield fence, which was covered in advertising, with a chain-link version.

In 1978, a hand-changed scoreboard was replaced with a neon scoreboard donated by the Ernest Fleckenstein Beverage Company.  In the 1980s, the electronic scoreboard was installed.

There is a video about the field at Bell Field Video Link.

In 2021, the Fox 9 Townball Tour visited the facility.  Fox 9 Town Ball Tour Link.

Parking

The field features ample parking, with over 150 spaces, and minimal threat of foul ball damage.  The disappointing part is that the large parking lot has no trees.  Being a city park, I expected more attention to the impact of urban heat islands and aesthetics.  I also enjoy parking in the shade of the trees on a hot day.  It was over 90 degrees on the day I attended.

Spectator Options

I am unsure of the capacity of the fully covered grandstand, but it is likely to be close to 2,000 spectators.  The main section behind home plate features a rail backing with many non-rail-backed bleacher seats.  The fully covered seats were GREAT on a scorching day, and a cool breeze made the game enjoyable.

One issue is the volume of the average-quality sound system.  It was so loud that I could not talk between innings to the person next to me without yelling.  I am unsure if they are oblivious, but that alone means I will bring earplugs if I go back!

Concessions (hot dog/root beer)

They served a typical store-bought Johnsonville Hot Dog and a basic bun.  They had Secret Stadium Saude for the hot dogs.  I have never seen that condiment before.  I learned it was initially developed at Milwaukee (WI) Stadium.  It was created by Rick Abramson, the president of Delaware North Companies.  He stated they were running out of ketchup and mustard, and we needed a condiment.  He took barbecue sauce, a little ketchup, mustard, smoked syrup, and other ingredients and developed secret stadium sauce.  I will look for the Sauce, but I would not look forward to another hot dog at Bell Field.

There was no Root Beer, so I had to suffer through the day with a Dr. Pepper.  The hot dog and soda were $5.  Overall, the concessions were basic, except for the special Sauce.

Summary

There is a $3 admission fee, which seems more common in larger facilities.  It was disappointing to see that the visiting team crowd (Prior Lake) was about the same size as the hometown crowd.  The excitement around Laker Baseball from decades ago has waned.

I am glad I attended a game at this field, yet I miss the larger crowds, the obvious local support, and the excitement you get in Miesville, Dundas, Jordan, and many more.  Unfortunately, I doubt I would return for another game, but the future is never known, and if I do, earplugs will be mandatory.

Review criteria and list of fields - including links for those reviewed.

Memorial Park - Dundas Dukes - Dundas, MN

Statue at the entrance

Memorial Park is on the Cannon River in Dundas, Minnesota. The ballpark hosts over 60 games annually, including the Dukes (Class B team with the Minnesota Baseball Association), Northfield Legion, Northfield High School, Dukes over-35 team, the Milltown Outlaws with the Federal League Class A, and the Minnesota State High School League Section Playoffs. The Dundas Baseball Association, the Dukes' parent organization, maintains and funds the ballpark. The Dukes rely on a network of dedicated volunteers and a small seasonal staff to manicure the four-acre complex. The 2024 season was challenging as the Cannon River experienced significant flooding. Once the flood receded, the volunteers quickly cleaned the field for play.

The park underwent a roughly $100,000 renovation in 2021, which included updating the main grandstand, a 500-square-foot press box, and a new audio system. Memorial Park co-hosted the 2022 Minnesota Baseball Association Class B and C State Tournaments with Miesville and Faribault. In 2016, the park renovated its grandstand area. The $100,000 project moved fans 12 feet closer to home plate. It included 105 stadium chairs, a tie-back net system to replace cyclone fencing, an ADA-access ramp, and three flower garden areas.

Parking

The access road to the park has approximately 25 angled parking spots.  Other parking is on the grass of the smaller field to the north.  Most of the parking is protected from foul balls.  There is also parking on the residential streets east of the field.

Spectator Options

Primary seating is in 105 stadium-style seats behind home plate, which are large and partially covered.  Bleachers are also located along the first and third bases, as well as in standing areas throughout the park.  The first-base bleachers have seat-back rails, whereas the visitor bleachers are traditional bleachers along the third base line.  The sound system is outstanding and well-balanced.

Concessions - Hot dog and root beer (my favorite)

The Concession stand is behind the home team dugout.  The options are more extensive than the typical ballpark fare, featuring chicken, fries, and cheese curds.  The prices are higher than the parks I have visited.

The hot dog was unique and not a typical thin hot dog.  It was not significantly ground; it was more like a sausage in texture.  It was definitely a hot dog, and the spice mix was perfect.  Ordering a second hot dog would be easy, but I limited myself to one.  As for the beverage, it was A&W Root Beer in a can, a common choice.

Summary

The team’s fan base is evident, and they came well-adorned in their official gear.  The atmosphere is outstanding,  and the layout places this park in the elite category for townball fields.  You really get a sense of community just watching the crowd.  I would estimate there were well over 100 spectators.  Dundas has an impressive merchandise booth, selling everything from Duke caps to t-shirts to can koozies.  Attending a game is a truly unique experience, and I highly recommend visiting the park.

Unlike many fields, there is no admission upon entering.  About mid-game, they walk through the spectators with a helmet for donations.

It is hard to find anything wrong with the facility.  The only upgrade I look forward to is replacing the older lighting, which has significant glare compared to the newer high-end LED systems you see at St. Francis Bonin Field or Elko's Fredrickson Field.

Attending a game is a truly unique experience, and I highly recommend visiting the park.

Bonin Field - St. Partrick Irish - St. Francis, MN

On July 25, 2024, I attended the St. Patrick Shamrocks vs. the Chaska Diamonds, a 35-year-and-over town ball team game at Bonin Field.  St. Patrick is a small unincorporated community comprising the St. Patrick Tavern and Grill, the St. Patrick Catholic Church of Cedar Lake, the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, and Bonin Field. Bonin Field was named after a former Catholic Priest, Fr. Leo Bonin, who was instrumental in supporting local baseball in St. Patrick in the 1950s.

Bonin Field had a significant renovation project in 1989.  An electronic scoreboard was installed in 2004, infield irrigation was added in 2008, and over 1,000 linear feet of drainage tile were installed below the playing surface in 2012.  In late summer 2015, irrigation was added to the rest of the field, along with a zone to water the infield with ag-lime. In the fall of 2018, the 30-year-old homemade backstop was demolished and replaced with a concrete knee wall and net backstop system. Part of the project was funded by a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.

A capital campaign for various improvements was launched in early 2021. By the end of 2021, nearly $335,000 had been pledged, and Phase I of the improvements, which included the installation of Musco LED ballpark lights, was underway. The lights were installed in February 2022, and the first official night game at Bonin Field occurred on June 3, 2022.

Photo from the platform
In the Fall of 2023, an ADA-accessible fan deck was constructed, allowing for easier access, improved mobility, and enhanced sightlines for all fans and visitors to the ballpark. As additional campaign funds are secured, additional improvements are planned.

The large embankment along the third base side provides fans with a unique bird's-eye view of the action on the field. The field’s dimensions are 318 ft. to each corner, 345 ft. to the gaps, and 365 ft. to the straightaway center. The fully stocked concession stand offers a variety of cold beverages, hot dogs, candy, chips, popcorn, and other treats.

Bonin Field hosts several teams, including:

  • Midgets - 3rd and 4th Grades
  • Pee Wee - 5th and 6th Grades
  • 13U - Under 13 team
  • 15U - Under 15 team
  • Town and Country - 9th, 10th and 11th graders
  • Irish - Class C Minnesota Baseball Association team
  • Shamrocks - Aged 35 plus
  • Emeralds - Aged 50 plus

The platform at the top of the hill

Fox 9 had a town hall visit at Bonin Field in 2021.  Click for the summary video.  There was also an interview with Bill Dunker, the Irish team's oldest member at the time (42).  It was his last year in the Irish as he retired from the team.

Parking

The parking immediately west of the field is a well-protected gravel lot with a capacity of just over 20 vehicles, which fulfills typical player parking. Approximately 100 yards northwest of the church is the church parking lot, which has around 70 spaces. The other parking is a grass field on the other side of Old County Highway 13, just north of the church parking lot. I assume many of these lots are spillover for the ballpark, tavern, and restaurant. The tavern and restaurant have approximately 35 parking spaces on-site. However, they do use the parking area for outdoor events.  There is more than ample parking for spectators at this location.

Spectator options

The platform features benches, providing a great way to view the game. However, if you are closer to 5 feet tall, the railing blocks a significant part of the field viewing opportunity if you sit back on the bench.  The other options are to sit on the ground on the hill or bring your own chairs to sit on the flat area behind home plate.

Concessions - Hot Dog/Root Beer (my ballgame favorite)

As part of the ball game, I look forward to a hot dog and root beer.  The hot dog is from Skluzacek's New Prague, MN, meat market.  It is much like all small-town meat market hot dogs with a crisp outer skin that has a slight snap when you take a bite.  The root beer is a can of A&W root beer, which is great to have as a caffeine-free beverage option at the ball field.  The total cost for the hot dog and root beer was $4. The popcorn is also average and typical for a town ball park.  The kids seemed to love the candy selection and Ice Cream drumsticks!

Summary

This is a well-maintained field and a great place to enjoy a game. I was informed that bleachers will be installed behind home plate in the future, which would significantly improve the view options. I highly recommend attending a game at this field, as it promises to be an enjoyable experience.

Review 253 fields?

I have been a significant Minnesota townball fan for decades.  Townball has been played in Minnesota since the 1920s.  Townball enjoyed its peak popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, with as many as 799 teams participating in the 1950 season.

Minnesota's first town baseball team is believed to have been Nininger's in 1857. The city of Nininger was located just west of Hastings, MN, but it no longer exists. John Nininger, brother-in-law of Governor Alexander Ramsey, founded and incorporated Nininger.

Throughout Minnesota, townball teams have played continuously since the 1880s.  In 1924, a State Tournament, masterminded by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press and Saint Paul Dispatch writers Roy Dunlap and Lou McKenna, was created.  This was followed by a townball governing body for Minnesota.  As of 2024, the Minnesota Baseball Association.  In 1986, the system was revamped to create a three-tier system (A, B, and C).  In 1986, there were 230 teams in the three classes.  Townball reached its peak at the end of World War II.  Thousands of players who played for the love of the game participated.

I retired early in 2024. Therefore, I decided to attend and review as many ballfields as I could while I had the opportunity. After reviewing the Minnesota Amateur Baseball site for several hours, I found that there are currently 274 teams playing (excluding over 35 and over 50 teams) on 253 ballfields. With 253 fields, this may take more than a decade, and I hope I will live long enough to attend a game at all of them.

A blog post would typically include background information from the field or internet search, a discussion on parking and spectator options, concessions, and a summary.

The teams and fields as of the July 2024 research are:
